Happy new year! We may be leaving 2017 behind, but we are certainly not escaping the accelerating waves of change — simultaneously exciting and challenging — that are now constant in our work lives.
When I first became involved with the OAUG nearly 14 years ago, my organization was preparing for change, updating business processes and embracing the new technologies that would support those changes. There was much to learn, and we became aware of the OAUG as a resource that could help us through the transition and ongoing.
As an OAUG member, I expected to learn about technology, which I certainly did. But there was so much more. The personal value to my professional capabilities and career was an unexpected benefit. I had the opportunity to make important professional connections through networking and develop leadership skills through volunteer activities on a number of OAUG committees. These additional experiences have been so valuable to me as I’ve learned to extend my contributions beyond the technology-specific skill set.
The OAUG’s strategic planning effort that began two years ago included specific goals to bolster our focus on professional development. Since that initial strategic planning phase, we have responded with some new initiatives:
Technology may push us, but the OAUG is about people. The pace of change shows no signs of slowing. Yet, connections made through the OAUG can inspire and empower people to build knowledge, skills and abilities — and prepare for professional advancement — no matter at what stage they are in their careers.
The 2018 OAUG Board of Directors and I will be meeting later this month to revisit the strategic plan. Please don’t hesitate to let me know what’s on your mind and how you think the OAUG can help you advance your career.

“When I look at my budget for training for my people vs. what I pay for them to come to COLLABORATE, the benefits far outweigh the costs …. My folks are empowered and excited at the end of COLLABORATE to try new things, do different things, in such a way that when they go back to the organization, we can really home in on issues and get questions answered.”
