[OAUGNetDBA]-Re: Oracle Apps storage solutions

I've used sun A3500, T3s, 9960 (actually a Hitachi), EMC 300, 700, an HP Tier1 storage array (another re-badged Hitachi) and I have seen the best performance with lots of spindles, the Veritas file system and hardware RAID 10 (best) and RAID 5 (ok). I have no experience with raw partitions or asm.

Don't let the sales people con you into using a few large disks. 15,000 RPM disks and lots of them will give you the best performance. We have seen performance degradation moving from old technology (A3500 and T3s) but with lots of 10,000 RPM 18 and 36GB Disks to new technology EMC Gear with 10,000RPM 73 and 146 GB disks. Array cache can only do so much. We went down at a ratio of 4 to 1 which I think is to much. I wouldn't recommend going down to anymore than half the number of disks you currently have. Also sharing the storage array with other applications (even if they are on different disks) does affect performance so if you can keep the storage dedicated to your application it would be best.

We are evaluating storage solutions for our applications 11i instance (about 200GB and growing about 2 GB per month).

Our sales reps are offering an EMC CX4-120 solution. I have always used Sun arrays (currently A5200) and am not familiar with EMC solutions.

Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions on what type of storage solutions are better for Oracle (software vs hardware RAID, cache sizes, etc.)?

Sorry if this is very vague, but I am not even sure what questions to ask at this point.

Thanks,
