News from Oracle OpenWorld 2007

Reporting in as your eyes and ears from San Francisco, Calif., here are some of the key announcements, news and highlights from Oracle OpenWorld 2007.

The OAUG Fusion Council Panel

OAUG’s “man on the street,” Fusion Council Chair and Oracle ACE Floyd Teter, reported on the OAUG Fusion Council Panel discussion.

During the panel discussion and Q&A session, Oracle's Steve Miranda, senior vice president, applications development, shared the following news on the status of Fusion Apps development:

  • The Business Requirements and Functional Design docs are complete, as are most of the Technical Design docs. Back-end coding is in process.
  • The heavy-duty discussions involve the scope of the first Fusion Apps release. The intent is to focus on the quality of the first release.

Miranda also indicated that the path to Fusion Applications from the Apps Unlimited product lines will be an upgrade rather than a new implementation. He further indicated that Oracle is committed to investing in existing products and will continue to have upgrades.

OAUG SIGs Meet, Learn and Plan

More than 55 OAUG SIGs held meetings, with more than 2400 people in attendance, during the 6th Annual Oracle Users Forum at Oracle OpenWorld. Following are reports from some of those meetings.

Hyperion SIG

With more than 100 people participating, the turnout far exceeded the projected attendance for the inaugural Hyperion SIG meeting. As part of the meeting, John O’Rourke, Oracle director of product marketing, gave an overview of Hyperion’s integration into Oracle and indicated Oracle's commitment to continue to support and enhance Enterprise Performance Management (EPM).

During the Hyperion SIG meeting, participants had the opportunity to share their needs and build a “wish list” for the SIG. Content, resources and networking were the items topping the “wish list.” If you would like to add your ideas or suggestions to the Hyperion SIG wish list, you may submit them to Ed Delise, Hyperion SIG coordinator, at edelise@finitsolutions.com.

Over the next few months, the SIG leadership team will be working to establish goals and develop an implementation plan to make the Hyperion SIG “Your Home for Hyperion.” For more information and to join the Hyperion SIG, visit the Hyperion SIG Web site.

Oracle CRM Community

Sunday’s meeting of the newly formed Oracle CRM Community was a huge success, with more than 125 participants attending the early morning meeting. President Audrey Bledsoe kicked off the meeting with an overview of the vision, goals and value proposition for the integrated community, which includes E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Siebel and Fusion products.

Stephen Silver, Steve Romeo and Nimish Shah, product pillar vice presidents for the Oracle CRM Community, led interactive discussions with attendees on topics ranging from the advisory group structure to the solicitation of volunteers to serve on the advisory boards.

The Oracle CRM Community’s presentations and discussions were supported by some of Oracle’s top strategy resources in the CRM space. The Oracle speakers were Mike Betzer, vice president of strategy, Oracle CRM; Valerie Haas, product strategy director, PeopleSoft CRM; Steve Nash, Siebel CRM product management; and Steve Tonas, senior director, EBS CRM.

Customer Data Management SIG (CDM SIG)

Mani Kumar Manda, CDM SIG coordinator, says that Customer Data Management is a common problem for every business. However, the tools and resources for Customer Data Management are not mature, and many of the individuals participating in the CDM SIG meetings are first-time attendees looking for information and assistance. Members of this community find exceptional value in being able to talk and learn with other members.

During the Customer Data Management SIG meeting at Oracle OpenWorld, Mani Kumar delivered a presentation on Trading Community Architecture (TCA) Implementation Considerations. Oracle representatives Shankar Bhardhwaj and Hari Krishna made a presentation covering the features and functions of R12.1 and its future features and directions.

Over the next few months, the CDM SIG is planning to schedule periodic conference calls to facilitate communication among members of the CDM community. The SIG will be forming a subset group for uses of Siebel Universal Customer Master (UCM). In addition, as Oracle increases the technology stack to address the Master Data Management (MDM) space, the CDM SIG will incorporate those products into the community focus. In the spring, the CDM SIG will hold a meeting and make presentations under the new MDM track at COLLABORATE 08: Technology and Applications Forum for the Oracle Community.

To find out more about the CDM SIG and participate in discussions, visit the CDM SIG on Yahoo! Groups.

Oracle Business Intelligence SIG (OBI SIG)

With approximately 150 people in attendance, the inaugural meeting of the Oracle Business Intelligence SIG was a big success. Basheer Khan, OBI SIG coordinator, says that everyone is interested in business intelligence (BI), and it cuts across all Oracle applications.

Oracle has finalized a BI strategy, and during the OBI SIG meeting, Oracle’s Joe Thomas presented an overview of the BI strategy for Enterprise Performance Management (EPM). Thomas also took the time to help participants identify specific events and sessions during Oracle OpenWorld that would help them get the most out of their OpenWorld experience.

Over the next few months, the OBI SIG will be working to provide additional resources via the OBI SIG Web site. Watch for additional Downloads, Resources and Listserver options to be added to the Web site. Also, watch for announcements about Webcasts and meetings, posting enhancements via the OAUG ERS system and an OBI SIG meeting at COLLABORATE 08: Technology and Applications Forum for the Oracle Community.

OAUG Middleware SIG

Elke Phelps, OAUG Middleware SIG coordinator, said that because SIG members are usually geographically dispersed, it is important to be able to get together face-to-face when possible. Being able to interact at events such as Oracle OpenWorld gives the SIG a physical presence and provides members a great opportunity for valuable learning and networking.

The meeting on Sunday was well attended, and Oracle’s Nadia Benjedou coordinated two great presentations, delivered by Oracle’s Biju Mohan and Max Arderius. The presentations covered:

  • R12: Subsetting or downsizing non-productive instances and scrambling sensitive data
  • Oracle Application Manager (OAM) integration with Enterprise Manager (EM) Grid Control

The OAUG Middleware SIG is planning to introduce some eLearning events and to coordinate meetings with the local Chicago or Ohio Valley users communities. The SIG will also present an OAUG Middleware SIG panel at COLLABORATE 08: Technology and Applications Forum for the Oracle Community. Panel participants will include the OAUG Middleware SIG Board, as well as a number of Oracle directors and experts for middleware products and the applications technology stack.

More information about the SIG is available on the OAUG Middlware SIG Web site.

Information about all of the OAUG Geographic (Geo) and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) is available on the OAUG User Communities Web page.
